Building the Temple
An Earthen Vessel
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
                                        2 Corinthians 4:7
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.
                                       1 Corinthians 6:19
"Your biggest challenge isn't someone                else. It's the ache in your lungs   and the burning in your legs, and the             voice inside you that yells
'CAN'T", but you don't listen. You just                 push harder. And then you hear the voice whisper 'can'. And                 you discover that the person you    thought you were is no match for the               one you really are."

ASD & CDC Research Statistics on Obesity in the United States

In 1962, research statistics showed that the percentage of obesity in America’s population was at 13%. By 1980 it has risen to 15% -- by 1994 to 23% -- and by the year 2000 the obesity progression in America had reached an unprecedented 31%!

The U.S. Surgeon General report declared that obesity is responsible for 300,000 deaths every year. These overwhelming research statistics reveal an alarming obesity trend, the need for diagnosis, and a call to action.

In the midst of an informational and research feeding frenzy on the obesity epidemic, statistics are easy to come by. The most widely disseminated CDC research statistics on American obesity tell us that 63% of adult Americans have a Body Mass Index (BMI) in excess of 25.0 and are therefore overweight; more than a quarter surpass 30.0, having been declared obese. Perhaps the most riveting statistics concern obesity in kids: research shows that childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past two decades.

Still, by focusing on the polite abstraction of Body Mass Index rather than actual bodyweight, the CDC has hindered the war on the prevention of obesity in America. Indeed, CDC research epidemiologists are faithful keepers of the public health record; but for reasons of technical precision and political propriety, they have scrupulously avoided the publication of the most crucial and powerful obesity statistics -- raw bodyweight averages for the American population.

The new IHRSA/ASD Obesity/Weight Control Report has published these graphic and visceral images of a dangerously overweight population. The "real" research statistics on obesity reveal that:

A current report on obesity and weight control research statistics is derived from the Superstudy® of Sports Participation, conducted in January 2004 by American Sports Data, Inc.

Health Consequences

Research has shown that as weight increases to reach the levels referred to as "overweight" and "obesity,"* the risks for the following conditions also increases:1

*Overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher; obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 or higher.
Diet

Main Entry: 1di•et
Pronunciation: \'dī-et\
Function: noun
Date: 13th century

1 a: food and drink regularly provided or consumed b: habitual nourishment c: the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason d: a regimen of eating and drinking sparingly so as to reduce one's weight <going on a diet>

Our culture is obsessed with the word DIET… as well we should be! But, our focus should not be for a quick fix or a fad… it shouldn’t come in a pill or magic potion, nor should it be left for a surgeon to nip and tuck it away… the word diet shouldn’t conger up imagery of chains and padlocks on the refrigerator, but of images that are liberating and freeing.

That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God.
                                                                                  Ecclesiastes 3:13

So I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work all the days of the life God has given him under the sun.                                                                                                     Ecclesiastes 8:15

If we look at the etymology of the word DIET... Middle English diete, from Anglo-French, from Latin diaeta, from Greek diaita, literally, manner of living, from diaitasthai to lead one's life. God did not create our vessels to be one of gluttony, nor live in the state of anorexia. We were meant to maintain balance... this perfect recipe for life has been reenacted throughout history a billion fold... take a Lily for example... it doesn’t take someone with a green thumb to figure out that if we water  the flower too much, it will drown... too little, it will wither and die… just right, it will blossom into an image of beauty.

At Pablo’s and Auggie’s our mission is not only to assist in creating a healthy exterior, but to assist and teach our clients on nourishing that vessel from within. God has created the foundation and built the infrastructure, it is our responsibility, as His creation, to do the rest. Our long term goal is not only to teach, but to give you the tools for a life full of vitality, energy, and wholeness… in body, mind, and spirit.

Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime.

Weight Management

There are lots of reasons for people who are overweight or obese to lose weight. To be healthier. To look better. To feel better. To have more energy.

No matter what the reason, successful weight loss and healthy weight management depend on sensible goals and expectations. If you set sensible goals for yourself, chances are you'll be more likely to meet them and have a better chance of keeping the weight off. In fact, losing even five to 10 percent of your weight is the kind of goal that can help improve your health.

Most overweight people should lose weight gradually. For safe and healthy weight loss, try not to exceed a rate of two pounds per week. Sometimes, people with serious health problems associated with obesity may have legitimate reasons for losing weight rapidly. If so, a physician's supervision is required.

What you weigh is the result of several factors:

Successful weight loss and weight management should address all of these factors. And that's the reason to ignore products and programs that promise quick and easy results, or that promise permanent results without permanent changes in your lifestyle. Any ad that says you can lose weight without lowering the calories you take in and/or increasing your physical activity is selling fantasy and false hope. In fact, some people would call it fraud. Furthermore, the use of some products may not be safe.

A Realistic Approach

Many people who are overweight or obese have decided not to diet per se, but to concentrate on engaging in regular physical activity and maintaining healthy eating habits in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, emphasizing lowered fat consumption, and an increase in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Others — who try to diet — report needing help to achieve their weight management goals.

Fad diets that ignore the principles of the Dietary Guidelines may result in short term weight loss, but may do so at the risk of your health. How you go about managing your weight has a lot to do with your long-term success. Unless your health is seriously at risk due to complications from being overweight or obese, gradual weight loss should be your rule — and your goal.
Vegetarianism

The practice of a diet that excludes meat (including game and slaughter by-products), fish (including shellfish and other sea animals) and poultry. There are several variants of the diet, some of which also exclude eggs and/or some products produced from animal labor such as dairy products and honey.

The vegan diet is a form of vegetarianism which excludes all animal products from the diet, such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, and honey. Those who practice veganism for ethical reasons often exclude animal products from their diet as part of a larger practice of abstaining from the use of animals for any purpose (e.g. leather, fur, etc.), often out of support for animal rights.

Most vegetarians consume dairy products, and many eat eggs. Lacto-vegetarianism includes dairy products but excludes eggs, ovo-vegetarianism includes eggs but not dairy, and lacto-ovo vegetarianism includes both eggs and dairy products.

Semi-vegetarianism consists of a diet largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish and sometimes even poultry, as well as dairy products and eggs. The association of semi-vegetarianism with vegetarianism in popular vernacular, particularly pescetarianism (also called pesco-vegetarianism and described as a "vegetarian" diet that includes fish), has led to what vegetarian groups cite as improper categorization of these diets as vegetarian. The Vegetarian Society, which initiated popular usage of the term vegetarian as early as 1847, condemns the association of semi-vegetarian diets as valid vegetarianism; the organization points out that the consumption of fish is not vegetarian.
Ayurvedic Diet

Ayurveda has considered about the diet in detail. The Ayurvedic diet is one that not only nourishes the body, but also restores balance of 'Tridoshas' [Vata, Pitta, and Kapha] which is very much essential for maintaining Health. Depending on our dosha, or constitutional type, some foods can be beneficial, and others should be avoided. These same foods may have the opposite effect on another dosha. The science of Ayurveda teaches that right diet is the foundation of healing. For maximum health and vitality, the ideal diet is one that balances our doshas.
Macrobiotic Diet

The Zen Macrobiotic diet originated over a century ago and today enjoys a worldwide following due its principles of harmonious living with nature through a balanced whole foods diet, and an active lifestyle and respect for the environment.

Lets look at why the Zen Macrobiotic diet has such a reputation for being one of the healthiest diets in the world.

Origins of the Zen Macrobiotic diet

Dr. Ishizuka ( the originator of the Zen Macrobiotic diet ) suffered both kidney and skin disease, so to restore his health conducted extensive research which was compiled into two books-Chemical Theory of Longevity, published in 1896, and Diet For Health, published in 1898.

His great successor Yukikazu Sakurazawa integrated the theory with elements of eastern and western philosophy and gave the diet the name we know it by today.

Zen Macrobiotic Diet theory

The Macrobiotic philosophy is based on the oriental principles that everything in creation is made up of two antagonistic but complementary forces—yin (passive, silent, cold and dark) and yang (active, hot and heavy).

Consequently, they categorized all foodstuffs as 'yin' and 'yang', or combinations of them both. They believe that the ideal diet is one that can help balance these two forces in the body.

Ohsawa himself defined macrobiotics as a dietetic medicine-philosophy, while his successors simply call it "a sensible way of eating". Actually, then, there is no macrobiotic diet per se, just general principles.

General principles of the Zen Macrobiotic diet

Diets based on cereal grains with minority proportions of vegetables, legumes, and seaweeds are considered ideal.

The Zen Macrobiotic diet is predominantly, but not absolutely, vegetarian.

The Zen Macrobiotic diet makes general dietary recommendations, particularly that 40 to 60 percent of caloric intake should come from whole grains, including rice, millet, barley, wheat, oats, rye, corn and buckwheat.

The Zen Macrobiotic Diet's 5 guiding principles for healthy living are:

Mediterranean Diet

If you're looking for a heart-healthy eating plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you. The Mediterranean diet incorporates the basics of healthy eating — plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps a glass of red wine — among other components characterizing the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

Most healthy diets include fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, and limit unhealthy fats. While these parts of a healthy diet remain tried-and-true, subtle variations or differences in proportions of certain foods may make a difference in your risk of heart disease.

Benefits of the Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet is thought to reduce your risk of heart disease. In fact, a 2007 study conducted in the United States found that both men and women who consumed a Mediterranean diet lowered their risk of death from both heart disease and cancer.

Key components of the Mediterranean diet include:

Diabetic Diet

Your diabetic diet is simply a healthy-eating plan that will help you control your blood sugar.  Having diabetes doesn't mean that you have to start eating special foods or follow a complicated diabetic diet. For most people, a diabetic diet simply translates into eating a variety of foods in moderate amounts and sticking to regular mealtimes.

This means choosing a diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Consistency also is key, because your body responds to excess calories and fat by creating an undesirable rise in blood sugar. Rather than a restrictive diet, a diabetic diet is a healthy-eating plan that's naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories. In fact, it's an awesome eating plan for everyone.
Gluten Free Diet

A gluten free diet excludes the protein gluten, which is found in grains such as wheat, barley or rye. If you or your child has celiac disease, a gluten free diet is essential, because gluten causes a problematic immune reaction in the small intestine. This reaction results in damage to the inner surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients from food.

If you think you may have celiac disease, wait until you've been diagnosed to start a gluten free diet. That's because it may be more difficult for your doctor to make a diagnosis if you've begun the diet before being tested.

Initially, following a gluten free diet may be frustrating. But with time, patience and creativity, you'll find there are many foods that you can eat and enjoy.
